Momentum Ingwe is the entry-level option of Momentum Medical Scheme, and in 2026 one adult pays between R645 and R4 546 a month, depending on income band, hospital choice and chronic provider. Contributions are based on your income and your family composition.

Ingwe is a real medical scheme option, not insurance: it belongs to an open scheme registered with the Council for Medical Schemes, so it carries prescribed minimum benefit rights. It is one of six Momentum options for 2026, alongside Evolve, Custom, Incentive, Extender and Summit.

This guide explains how the price is set, which hospitals you can choose, who it suits and what to check before you join. For the whole scheme, read the Momentum Medical Scheme review.

What Ingwe is

Ingwe is the affordable entry option in the Momentum Medical Scheme range. Momentum describes it as an income-based option: your contribution depends on your income and your family composition, and it also depends on which hospital list and chronic provider you choose.

It is a scheme option, so the usual protections apply. That includes prescribed minimum benefits, which cover 271 conditions plus 26 chronic conditions on the Chronic Disease List, paid in full without a co-payment. Momentum's own products, such as HealthSaver+, GapCover+ and Multiply, are separate from the scheme and are not scheme benefits. Momentum Health4Me is also separate from the six scheme options.

We have verified the price structure and the hospital choices but not every benefit limit, so ask for the current Ingwe Member Guide before you join.

Ingwe prices by income band, 2026

Ingwe has six income bands. The two ends of the price grid for one adult in 2026 are:

Income bandOne adult, a month
R0 to R1 550 (lowest of six bands)R645, the lowest price on the grid
R23 501+ (top of six bands)R4 546, the highest price on the grid (Any hospital)

The four bands between them are not shown because we could only verify the two ends. Price also moves with your hospital and chronic provider choice, so your own price will sit somewhere between those two figures. Ask for a quote for your own income, family and hospital.

The brochure grid also has columns for families. We have not verified how dependants are priced on Ingwe, so do not assume they are charged like adults. Ask Momentum for a family quote.

How the income bands and hospital choice work

Two things set your price: where you fall on the income scale and which hospital list you choose. Momentum offers Ingwe with Any hospital, the Ingwe Network of private hospitals, or Connect Network hospitals. The site's wording varies between State hospitals and Connect Network hospitals, so confirm which network applies to your option.

Using a smaller network lowers the contribution, but the saving disappears if the hospital you actually use is outside it. Check the exact hospital, and the specialists you may need, on the current list before you choose. Which income counts, and what proof Momentum asks for, is not stated in the facts we checked, so ask Momentum directly and keep your payslips or bank statements ready. If your income changes, ask how and when your band is reviewed.

Read network versus traditional plans and designated service providers.

Hospitals and doctors on Ingwe

In an emergency you may go to the nearest facility, and the scheme must pay for prescribed minimum benefit emergency treatment. For planned care, use a hospital on your chosen list and get pre-authorisation first.

People search for a "Momentum Ingwe network doctors list". We have not verified where Momentum publishes it, so we do not link to one. Ask Momentum or use the Momentum App, which has a find-a-provider feature, and check your own GP and specialist by name before you join. If a provider is not on the list, ask what you would pay.

What to check about benefits

Ingwe pays prescribed minimum benefits, and members get Multiply Engage free. Beyond that, ask for details of:

  • Day-to-day cover: GP visits, dentistry, optometry and medicine, and any limits.
  • Chronic medicine: the chronic provider you choose affects the price, so ask where you would collect your medicine and whether yours is on the formulary.
  • Maternity: the number of visits, scans and hospital stays covered.
  • Co-payments and any annual limits.

Our chronic disease benefits guide, medical aid for pregnancy and co-payments and sub-limits explain what each term means.

Who Ingwe suits, and how it compares

Ingwe suits lower earners, young families and first-time scheme members who want real scheme cover and can live with a hospital network. Students and young adults who earn little may find the lowest income band's price attractive, but confirm which income is counted for a student who lives at home. See medical aid for students.

It suits you less if you need a wide choice of hospitals and doctors, because the cheaper hospital lists are narrower, or if you want a savings account, since we have not verified Ingwe's savings arrangements.

How to contact Momentum and use the app

These details are from Momentum's scheme site.

The Momentum App lets you submit and track claims, get pre-authorisation, find a network provider, download your membership card or tax certificate and connect to a virtual help session. Our contact numbers hub lists other schemes.

Joining, waiting periods and the tax credit

Momentum Medical Scheme is open, so it must accept any applicant who can pay, but waiting periods can apply. If you have had no cover for at least 90 days, up to three months general and up to 12 months condition-specific waiting periods are allowed. If your previous cover ended under 90 days ago, only one of them can apply, and PMB treatment is excluded. A late joiner penalty can apply if you are 35 or older and were not continuously covered. See waiting periods and the late joiner guide.

For 2026/27 the medical scheme fees tax credit is R376 a month for you, R376 for the first dependant and R254 for each further dependant. It only reduces tax you owe and is not paid out, so on a low income it may not help. See the tax credit guide.

2026 increase and 2027

Momentum's average weighted contribution adjustment for 2026 was 9.9%. Broker Aon reported 9.4% to 9.8% for Ingwe specifically, which is a broker figure rather than a Momentum statement. Momentum had not announced 2027 contributions when we checked on 29 September 2026. The Council for Medical Schemes has recommended anchoring 2027 increases at 3.8%, though schemes can justify more. See medical aid increases for 2027. Momentum Medical Scheme is also News24's Medical Scheme of the Year for 2026 according to Momentum.
