Modern hospital corridor - Medical aid contact numbers in South Africa
Member, emergency and pre-authorisation numbers for 32 South African medical schemes, each checked on the scheme's own website on 29 September 2026.

This page lists the member call centre, emergency and hospital pre-authorisation numbers for 32 South African medical schemes and health cover brands. We checked every number on the scheme's own website on 29 September 2026, and each row links to the page we used.

In a medical emergency, call the scheme's emergency or ambulance line, or go straight to the nearest emergency unit: emergency treatment is a prescribed minimum benefit. For a planned hospital stay, call the pre-authorisation line before you are admitted, or the scheme may not pay in full.

Numbers change. If a number does not connect, use the scheme's app or website, and never pay money into a bank account given to you by an unexpected caller.

Emergency and ambulance numbers

Most schemes contract an emergency provider such as ER24 or Netcare 911. Save your scheme's number in your phone now, not in the middle of an emergency.

Which number to call, and when

  • Emergency: the emergency or ambulance line, or go to the nearest casualty unit. Tell the scheme within the time its rules allow (often the next working day).
  • Planned hospital stay or procedure: the pre-authorisation line, before admission. See pre-authorisation.
  • Claims, benefits, tax certificate or changing your details: the member line, the app or the member web portal.
  • Joining or switching: the scheme's sales line or an accredited broker. Read how to join a medical aid first.
  • A complaint the scheme has not resolved: the Council for Medical Schemes, which is free.

How to avoid a fake medical aid call

Fraudsters pose as schemes to collect contributions, banking details or one-time PINs. A scheme will not ask you to move your debit order to a new bank account over the phone or WhatsApp. Hang up and phone the number on the scheme's website or your membership card. You can check that a scheme is registered with the Council for Medical Schemes.

Frequently asked questions

Are these medical aid numbers official?

Yes. Each number was taken from the scheme's own website on 29 September 2026, and each row links to the page we used. Numbers can change, so confirm on the scheme's site before calling.

Which number do I call in a medical emergency?

Call your scheme's emergency or ambulance line, or go directly to the nearest emergency unit. Emergency care is a prescribed minimum benefit, so the scheme must cover it, but let the scheme know as soon as you can.

Do I need to call my medical aid before going to hospital?

For planned admissions, yes: most schemes require pre-authorisation before you are admitted, and may cut what they pay if you do not get it. In an emergency you can be admitted first and authorise afterwards.

What if my medical aid does not resolve my complaint?

Complain to the scheme in writing first and give it a chance to respond. If it does not resolve the problem, you can lodge a free complaint with the Council for Medical Schemes.
