Remedi Medical Aid Scheme is a restricted scheme: membership is only for employees of Remgro Limited and its associated or formerly associated companies, so the public cannot join. The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) register lists it as restricted, and you cannot buy a Remedi plan through a broker or website.

It is administered by Discovery Health and had 22 004 main members and 47 530 lives at 31 December 2025. For 2026 it has three options: Remedi Comprehensive, Remedi Classic and Remedi Standard.

The contact numbers and the 2026 contribution tables are on this page. This page is for Remgro group employees choosing an option, and for people searching whether Remedi is open to the public: it is not.

Who can join Remedi, and who cannot

Remedi is for Remgro Limited employees and employees of its associated or formerly associated companies. Your employer sets your income category, which drives your contribution, and retirees are placed at their last income category less two categories. To join, speak to your HR department or the scheme through your employer.

If you are not in that group, you cannot join, and searches such as "Remedi medical aid quotes" will not lead to an open application. Open schemes must accept anyone who applies and can pay. See our list of medical aid schemes and best medical aid page for options you can actually join.

Remedi plans and prices in 2026

Remedi Medical Aid Scheme publishes 3 benefit options for 2026. Prices are the monthly contribution for a main member as published by Remedi, and income-banded plans show the band. Adult and child dependants pay extra. Checked on 29 September 2026.

How the three options are structured in 2026

OptionTypeWhat it is
Remedi ComprehensiveComprehensiveTop option with a Personal Medical Savings Account (PMSA) funded from part of the contribution, insured out-of-hospital benefits, and extra GP visits once those and the PMSA run out
Remedi ClassicComprehensiveSlightly cheaper than Comprehensive, with no PMSA and lower benefit limits
Remedi StandardNetworkLimited benefits, with certain limits provided only by Remedi's appointed designated service providers within a network, and limited out-of-area benefits if you use a GP outside the network

Contributions are banded by income category, with separate rates for the principal member, an adult or spouse, and a child. Prices are in the plans table on this page. Remedi's 2026 brochure states that it is a summary awaiting approval from the CMS, so check the scheme rules for final benefits.

Remedi contact numbers

Checked on 29 September 2026 against Remedi's official website. Numbers change, so confirm on the linked page before you call. A scheme will not ask you to pay into a new bank account over the phone: hang up and call the official number if anything feels off.

Network and hospital rules

A Day Surgery Network has been available to all members on all options since 1 January 2024. On Standard, you must stay within the network and the appointed designated service providers (DSPs) for the benefits that are limited to them. Using a GP outside the network gives only limited out-of-area benefits.

Because Discovery Health administers the scheme, pre-authorisation, chronic medicine approval and oncology and HIV programmes all run through one member call centre, listed in the contact table. Get pre-authorisation before a planned admission. In an emergency, the scheme cannot stop a provider starting treatment, and ER24 is the emergency services line. See our pre-authorisation guide and designated service providers guide.

Savings and day-to-day benefits

Comprehensive puts part of your contribution into the PMSA. Insured out-of-hospital benefits and the PMSA cover day-to-day care, and once both run out you get extra GP visits. Classic has no PMSA and lower limits, so it costs less but leaves more day-to-day risk with you.

For 2026 the scheme raised day-to-day (insured out-of-hospital) limits by about 9%, expected inflation plus an extra 5%, and frame and lens optical limits by 5%. From 1 January 2026, all HPCSA-registered allied and therapeutic disciplines are covered under the insured out-of-hospital benefit on Comprehensive and Classic. Alternative disciplines such as homeopathy are covered only from the PMSA on Comprehensive. See our medical savings account guide and day-to-day benefits guide.

Chronic cover, diabetes and PMBs

Chronic medicine is approved through the member call centre. From 1 January 2026, members with type 1 or type 2 diabetes on Comprehensive and Classic can access continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices without registering on the Diabetes Care Programme. CGM is not covered on Standard.

On Standard, non-PMB organ transplants are no longer covered from 1 January 2026. Every option must still pay PMB diagnosis, treatment and care in full, without co-payment or deductible, at a DSP. See prescribed minimum benefits and chronic disease benefits.

Maternity

We could not verify maternity benefits or limits for any Remedi option. If you are planning a pregnancy, ask Remedi in writing which option covers antenatal care and delivery, and whether a waiting period applies. See our medical aid for pregnancy guide.

What changed for 2026 and what to expect for 2027

For 2026 the Board approved an average contribution increase of 5.2%. The scheme says medical inflation was estimated at 8.1% and that its increase compares with 6.8% to 9.9% announced by open schemes. Remedi launched a new app on 1 December 2025, with Virtual Urgent Care available through it. The Remedi Health App also lets you speak to a doctor, order medicine, see your benefit limits and PMSA, and submit claims with a photo.

Remedi's membership grew 4.2% in 2025, the average age of beneficiaries is 32.2 against an industry average of 34.2, and its solvency ratio was 68.74% at the end of 2025. No 2027 increase has been published. For context, the CMS recommended in Circular 20 of 2026 that 2027 increases be anchored at 3.8%, a benchmark and not a hard cap. See our 2027 increases page.

How Remedi compares with alternatives

  • Anglo Medical Scheme: another restricted scheme administered by Discovery Health, for Anglo American, Mondi and Mpact employees and retirees. See Anglo Medical Scheme.
  • Discovery Health Medical Scheme: the largest open scheme in South Africa, which anyone can join. See Discovery Health.
  • Bonitas: a large open scheme that anyone can join. See Bonitas.

If you leave the Remgro group, you will need an open scheme or another employer scheme. Remember that switching does not automatically cancel waiting periods, and a late-joiner penalty can follow you. Our how to change medical aid guide covers the steps.

Joining Remedi, waiting periods and complaints

You join through your employer. The Act sets these ceilings, but the scheme's rules decide what is applied to you, so check them. The Medical Schemes Act sets the ceilings. If you have had no cover for 90 days or more, or have never had cover, a scheme may impose a general waiting period of up to three months and a condition-specific waiting period of up to 12 months. These are maximums, and a scheme may impose shorter periods or none. Switching within 90 days does not wipe waiting periods out: after up to 24 months of earlier cover the new scheme may still impose a condition-specific period of up to 12 months, and after more than 24 months it may still impose a general period of up to three months. Neither can be applied to treatment of Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs). There is no waiting period when you move between options on the same scheme, or for a baby born while you are a member. Read more in waiting periods and exclusions.

Late-joiner penalties. A late joiner is someone aged 35 or older when they apply, without earlier cover. The loading is a percentage of that adult's own part of the contribution only, and the maximum depends on the years you were uncovered after 35, less any years of cover you can prove: 1 to 4 years is 5%, 5 to 14 years is 25%, 15 to 24 years is 50% and 25 years or more is 75%. Example: a 45-year-old with no proof of earlier cover has 10 years to count (45 minus 35), which falls in the 5 to 14 year band, so the maximum loading is 25%. A sworn affidavit can prove earlier cover if the documents are gone, and the penalty can follow you to another scheme. See the late joiner penalty guide.

Tax credit. For the 2026/27 tax year (1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027) the medical scheme fees tax credit is R376 a month for you, R752 a month for you and one dependant together, and R254 a month for each additional dependant. It only reduces the tax you owe and cannot be carried over. Details are in the medical aid tax credit guide.

Complaints. If something goes wrong, raise it with Remedi first and keep a written record. The member call centre is the first step, and Remedi has an anonymous fraud hotline for suspected fraud. If you are not satisfied after using the scheme's own complaints process, you can complain to the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS), the regulator. Send a completed complaint form with proof that you took it up with the scheme to [email protected], or phone the CMS on 0861 123 267 (Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:30). The CMS acknowledges a complaint in writing within 6 working days, asks the scheme to comment, and aims to finish within 120 calendar days of receiving the scheme's response and documents. Clinically urgent complaints are handled urgently. Our CMS complaints guide explains each step.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Remedi contact number?

According to Remedi's website (checked 29 September 2026), the member line is 0860 116 116, and for an emergency or ambulance call 084 124. Confirm on the official site before calling, because numbers change.

Is Remedi medical aid open to the public?

No. Remedi is a restricted scheme for employees of Remgro Limited and its associated or formerly associated companies. The CMS register lists it as restricted, so a member of the public cannot join.

Who administers Remedi?

Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd administers the scheme. Members phone one call centre for pre-authorisation, chronic medicine approval and general queries.

What options does Remedi offer for 2026?

Three: Remedi Comprehensive, Remedi Classic and Remedi Standard. Comprehensive has a Personal Medical Savings Account, Classic is slightly cheaper with no PMSA, and Standard is a network option with limited benefits.

What was Remedi's 2026 increase?

The Board approved an average contribution increase of 5.2% for 2026. The scheme says this compares with 6.8% to 9.9% announced by open schemes. Your own increase depends on your option and income category.

Does Remedi have an app?

Yes. The Remedi Health App launched on 1 December 2025. It offers Emergency Assist without logging in, virtual consultations and Virtual Urgent Care, medicine ordering, benefit and PMSA views, and claims by photo.

Is CGM covered for diabetes at Remedi?

From 1 January 2026, members with type 1 or type 2 diabetes on Comprehensive and Classic can access continuous glucose monitoring devices without registering on the Diabetes Care Programme. It is not covered on Standard.

Is Remedi a medical scheme or insurance?

It is a registered medical scheme, so it answers to the CMS and must pay PMBs. Gap cover and hospital cash plans are health insurance and not medical schemes, and complaints about them go to the National Financial Ombud.
