Discovery Health Medical Scheme is the largest open medical scheme in South Africa, with more than 2.7 million members, and as an open scheme it must accept any applicant who can pay. It is a non-profit scheme (Council for Medical Schemes registration number 1125), independent of the Discovery Group and administered by Discovery Health (Pty) Ltd.
For 2026 the plan range has eight series: Executive, Comprehensive, Priority, Saver, Smart Saver (new this year), Smart, Core (the hospital plans) and KeyCare. Several series come in Classic, Essential, Delta or Coastal versions, and the Essential, Delta and Coastal versions restrict your hospital network in exchange for a lower contribution.
The 2026 increase averaged 7.2% and only took effect on 1 April 2026, not 1 January. Price is only one test. Compare plans on the hospital network, the day-to-day money and the co-payments, not on the brand, and confirm the current rules with the scheme before you join.
Who Discovery Health suits, and who it does not
Discovery suits people who want a large scheme with a full plan ladder, so they can move up or down within one scheme as life changes. Changing between options in the same scheme does not bring new waiting periods, unless one is still running on your current option.
It tends to suit:
- Lower and middle earners who will use network doctors and hospitals: KeyCare, Smart, and the Essential and Delta versions of other series.
- Young singles, couples and young families who want hospital cover plus a small savings account: Saver and Smart Saver.
- Members who want broader in-hospital cover and more day-to-day money: Priority, Comprehensive and Executive.
It suits you less if you want to keep your own doctor and your own hospital on a low contribution, because the cheaper plans are network plans. If you work in banking, note that Bankmed is a restricted scheme that Discovery Health administers, and it may be open to you instead.

How the 2026 plan range is structured
Discovery's 2026 range is built from eight series. This table shows what each offers, going by the scheme's own plan descriptions.
| Series | What it offers | Savings account |
|---|---|---|
| Executive | Most extensive in-hospital and day-to-day cover, extended chronic medicine cover, unlimited Above Threshold Benefit and Personal Health Fund | Yes |
| Comprehensive | In-hospital and day-to-day cover, extended chronic medicine cover, limited Above Threshold Benefit and Personal Health Fund | Yes |
| Priority | In-hospital cover, essential chronic medicine cover and day-to-day benefits, limited Above Threshold Benefit and Personal Health Fund | Yes |
| Saver | In-hospital cover, essential chronic medicine cover, day-to-day cover through the savings account and Personal Health Fund | Yes |
| Smart Saver | New for 2026 and aimed at young families: unlimited in-hospital cover, essential chronic medicine cover, limited day-to-day cover | Yes |
| Smart | Cost-effective in-hospital cover, essential chronic medicine cover and limited day-to-day cover if you use providers in a specified network | No |
| Core | Hospital plans: unlimited private hospital cover on Classic Core and essential chronic medicine cover, no day-to-day cover | No |
| KeyCare | Network in-hospital and out-of-hospital cover, contributions based on income | No |
Some series have Classic, Essential, Delta or Coastal versions. Essential, Delta and Coastal are the restricted-network versions. Active Smart is the entry Smart plan for young professionals, and its contribution was held flat for 2026 (0% increase).
For detail on the two series most people ask about, see our pages on Discovery KeyCare and the Discovery Saver plans. Current contributions are in the plans and prices table on this page and in Discovery's official contribution table.

Networks, hospitals and emergencies
KeyCare, Smart and the Essential, Delta and Coastal versions ask you to use a defined hospital network, and on some plans a defined GP network too. Use it and the plan pays as designed. Step outside it by choice and you may face a co-payment.
Under the Medical Schemes regulations a scheme may require you to use a designated service provider (DSP) for Prescribed Minimum Benefits and charge a co-payment or deductible if you use another provider voluntarily. No co-payment is allowed if you used a non-DSP involuntarily, for example when the DSP could not provide the service without unreasonable delay, or when there is no DSP within reasonable distance of your home or work. In an emergency you may go to the nearest facility even if it is not a DSP, and the scheme must cover the cost. Read more in our guides to designated service providers and pre-authorisation, and remember that planned hospital admissions need authorisation first.
Discovery runs an emergency line called Discovery911, and the Emergency assist button in the Discovery Health app reaches a dedicated Netcare 911 team. The numbers are in the contact table on this page, and every scheme's numbers are collected on our medical aid contact numbers page.
Savings, day-to-day and chronic cover
Executive, Comprehensive, Priority, Saver and Smart Saver plans include a medical savings account for day-to-day costs. Smart, Core and KeyCare plans do not. Many plans also carry a Personal Health Fund. For 2026 Discovery more than doubled the 2025 earning limits on that fund and gave R1 000 opening balances to engaged members, so ask what it is worth on the plan you are considering. The Above Threshold Benefit is the safety net for day-to-day costs once your savings are used up: it is unlimited on Executive and limited on Comprehensive and Priority. Our medical savings account and day-to-day benefits guides explain how these work.
Chronic cover comes in two levels: essential chronic medicine cover on Priority, Saver, Smart Saver, Smart, Core, and extended chronic medicine cover on Comprehensive and Executive. Whatever plan you choose, Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) must be paid in full, without a co-payment, subject to DSP rules and the scheme's treatment protocols and formulary. The Council for Medical Schemes says PMBs cover 271 conditions and a chronic list of 26 conditions, although one of its August 2026 presentations says 27, so ask Discovery for the current list. See prescribed minimum benefits and chronic disease benefits.
The Discovery Health app lets you manage your plan (providers, claims, benefits and balances), speak to a doctor online at any hour, use an online pharmacy, reach Emergency assist and use digital mental health tools. Vitality is a separate, paid rewards programme and not part of your scheme contribution.
Maternity and what we could not verify
Maternity cover differs by plan, and our 2026 checks did not verify the maternity limits or programme rules for each Discovery plan. Ask the scheme for the benefit guide for your plan and register your pregnancy early. Our maternity benefits checklist and medical aid for pregnancy pages list what to ask.
We also did not verify network lists. Check that your GP and nearest hospital are on the plan's network before you sign.
What changed for 2026, and what to expect for 2027
Discovery deferred all of its 2026 contribution increases from 1 January to 1 April 2026, so members paid 2025-level contributions from January to March. The weighted average increase is 7.2%, with 65% of members getting 6.9% and Active Smart at 0%. The increase was reported as 7.9% on Executive, Comprehensive, Coastal Saver, Coastal Core and KeyCare. Because it only started in April, an independent analysis (EBnet) puts the effective increase over the calendar year at about 5.4%.
The new Smart Saver series launched on 1 January 2026 with Classic Smart Saver and Essential Smart Saver.
For 2027, Discovery had not announced contributions by 29 September 2026, and its newsroom's latest item was dated 22 September 2026. It announced the 2026 increase on 30 September 2025, so an announcement may come soon. The Council for Medical Schemes has recommended that schemes use 3.8% as the starting point for 2027 increases. That is a benchmark, not a cap, and the CMS itself says private medical inflation usually runs 2 to 3 percentage points above CPI. Follow our 2027 increases page.
How Discovery compares with Bonitas, Momentum and Bestmed
The other large open schemes offer a similar ladder.
- Bonitas: the second largest open scheme by its own description. Its 2026 increase averaged 8.8% across plans. It has an income-based network plan, BonCap, comparable in purpose to KeyCare.
- Momentum Health: an open scheme with an income-based entry option, Ingwe, and a 9.9% average increase for 2026.
- Bestmed: self-administered, with income-based network-only Rhythm options and the lowest 2026 increase of the top five open schemes, at 6.8%.
On reported 2026 increases, an Alexforbes analysis put Momentum at 9.9%, Fedhealth at 9.6%, Bonitas at 8.88%, Medihelp at 8.46%, Discovery at 7.2% and Bestmed at 6.8%. A lower increase says nothing about whether the plan covers what your family needs, so compare benefits too. Our best medical aid guide and hospital plan versus comprehensive page help you weigh that up.
Joining, waiting periods, tax and complaints
Discovery is an open scheme, so it must enrol anyone who applies and can pay, though it can impose waiting periods. If you had no medical scheme cover in the 90 days before applying, the law allows up to a 3-month general waiting period and up to a 12-month condition-specific waiting period. With a shorter gap after earlier cover, the scheme may impose only one of the two, and never for PMB treatment. Ask Discovery which waiting periods it will apply to your application. See waiting periods and exclusions.
If you are 35 or older when you first join and have no earlier cover, a late joiner penalty applies to your own portion of the contribution: at most 5% if you are 1 to 4 years past the threshold, 25% for 5 to 14 years, 50% for 15 to 24 years and 75% for 25 years or more. Cover you can prove reduces it. Read late joiner penalty for the worked calculation.
For the 2026/27 tax year, SARS gives a medical scheme fees tax credit of R376 a month for the main member, R752 a month for the member and one dependant, and R254 a month for each additional dependant. See the medical aid tax credit.
To join, use the Discovery medical aid site or a registered broker. If Discovery does not resolve a complaint, escalate to the Council for Medical Schemes after you have used the scheme's own process. Our CMS complaints guide shows the steps.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Discovery Health contact number?
According to Discovery Health's website (checked 29 September 2026), the member line is 0860 99 88 77 (+27 11 529 6900 outside SA), and for an emergency or ambulance call 0860 999 911 (+27 11 529 6900 for international emergencies). Confirm on the official site before calling, because numbers change.
Is Discovery Health an open or restricted scheme?
Open. Discovery Health Medical Scheme is the largest open scheme in South Africa, so it must accept any applicant who can pay. It can still impose waiting periods and, for people who join late, a late joiner penalty.
What plans does Discovery Health have in 2026?
Eight series: Executive, Comprehensive, Priority, Saver, Smart Saver, Smart, Core and KeyCare. Some come in Classic, Essential, Delta or Coastal versions. Core plans are hospital plans, and Smart Saver is new for 2026.
Which Discovery plans have no savings account?
Smart, Core and KeyCare have no medical savings account. Executive, Comprehensive, Priority, Saver and Smart Saver do. Without a savings account, day-to-day cover is limited to whatever the plan itself provides.
When did Discovery's 2026 increase start?
On 1 April 2026. Discovery deferred all 2026 increases from 1 January, so members paid 2025 contributions from January to March. The weighted average increase is 7.2%, or about 5.4% over the calendar year according to an independent analysis.
Has Discovery announced its 2027 increase?
Not by 29 September 2026. Last year it announced on 30 September. The Council for Medical Schemes recommends 3.8% as the starting point for 2027, which is a benchmark and not a limit. Check our 2027 increases page for updates.
Does Discovery cover pre-existing conditions?
Yes, after any waiting period. The law allows a general waiting period of up to 3 months and a condition-specific one of up to 12 months, but not for PMB treatment. Ask Discovery what it will apply to you, and whether your earlier cover shortens it.
Is Vitality part of Discovery medical aid?
No. Vitality is a separate paid rewards programme, and you can have Discovery Health cover without it.
How do I complain about Discovery?
Start with Discovery's own complaints process and keep a record. If you are not satisfied, send the complaint to the Council for Medical Schemes with proof that you tried the scheme first. Our CMS complaints guide lists the steps.
