Discovery's Saver series gives you in-hospital cover, essential chronic medicine cover and a medical savings account for day-to-day costs, and in 2026 it has seven plans: Classic Saver, Classic Delta Saver, Essential Saver, Essential Delta Saver, Coastal Saver, and the new Classic Smart Saver and Essential Smart Saver. Monthly main member contributions run from R2 750 to R4 850.
The plans differ in three ways: the price, how much of it goes into your savings account, and how tightly the hospital network is restricted. Delta, Essential and Coastal versions use restricted hospital networks, so check the network before you compare prices.
The figures below come from Discovery's 2026 contribution table and apply from 1 April 2026. Confirm the details with Discovery before you join.
Discovery Saver prices and savings accounts in 2026
Every Saver contribution has two parts: a risk contribution that pays for hospital and chronic cover, and a medical savings account (MSA) for day-to-day costs. The MSA is part of the total, not an extra. This table shows the total monthly contribution for the main member from 1 April 2026, cheapest first.
| Plan | Total a month | Risk contribution | Savings account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Essential Smart Saver | R2 750 | R2 557 | R193 |
| Essential Delta Saver | R3 099 | R2 790 | R309 |
| Classic Smart Saver | R3 350 | R3 115 | R235 |
| Classic Delta Saver | R3 875 | R3 100 | R775 |
| Essential Saver | R3 886 | R3 498 | R388 |
| Coastal Saver | R4 098 | R3 484 | R614 |
| Classic Saver | R4 850 | R3 880 | R970 |
Adult dependant and child rates are in Discovery's 2026 contribution table.
The savings accounts are modest. On Essential Delta Saver R309 a month goes into savings, and on Classic Saver R970. Whether that lasts a year depends on how much day-to-day care your household uses, so add up last year's GP, medicine and dentist bills before you choose.
Classic, Essential, Delta and Coastal: what the names mean
- Classic Saver: the standard Saver plan and the most expensive, with the largest savings account of the seven.
- Classic Delta Saver: a Saver series variant at a lower price than Classic Saver.
- Essential Saver: the Saver series essential (network) version, with a smaller savings account.
- Essential Delta Saver: the lowest-priced of the older Saver plans, with the smallest savings account of them.
- Coastal Saver: Discovery's coastal version of the Saver series. We have not verified which hospitals it includes, so check the hospital list.
Discovery's Delta, Essential and Coastal versions use restricted hospital networks, as its Core hospital plans show, so confirm this for the Saver plan you choose. Always look at the actual network for your area, because a cheaper plan with a hospital you cannot reach is not a saving. Our network versus traditional plans page explains the trade-off.
Smart Saver: the new 2026 series
Discovery launched the Smart Saver series on 1 January 2026, aimed at young families. Classic Smart Saver offers unlimited in-hospital cover, essential chronic medicine cover, limited day-to-day cover, a medical savings account and a Personal Health Fund. Essential Smart Saver is the network version.
Both have the smallest savings accounts in the range, so they lean on the plan's own limited day-to-day benefit. That suits a young family that mainly wants hospital protection and low monthly cost, and less well a household that visits the doctor often.
How the savings account and Personal Health Fund work
Your savings account pays for day-to-day costs such as GP visits and medicine until it runs out. Read medical savings account and day-to-day benefits for what happens then. On the Saver series there is no Above Threshold Benefit listed in Discovery's plan summaries, so once the account is empty you may pay out of pocket. Ask Discovery how yours works.
Saver plans also carry a Personal Health Fund. For 2026 Discovery more than doubled the 2025 earning limits and gave R1 000 opening balances to engaged members. From January to March 2026 the monthly savings amounts were still at 2025 rates, because the increase was deferred.
Saver compared with Smart, Priority, Core and KeyCare
If you want to compare Saver with other Discovery series, remember that Smart, Core and KeyCare have no savings account. Smart plans are network plans with flat contributions, and KeyCare plans are network plans priced by income. Core plans are hospital plans with no day-to-day cover. Priority and Comprehensive plans also have a savings account and a limited Above Threshold Benefit, at higher prices. See Discovery KeyCare, hospital plans explained and our full Discovery Health review.
Other schemes offer savings plans too, such as Bonitas BonSave and BonClassic and Bestmed Beat2 and Beat3, so compare the network, the savings share and the price.
The 2026 increase and what to expect for 2027
Discovery deferred all 2026 increases from 1 January to 1 April 2026. The scheme's weighted average increase is 7.2%, with 65% of members getting 6.9%. The increase was reported as 7.9% on Coastal Saver and Coastal Core.
For 2027, Discovery had not announced contributions by 29 September 2026. It announced last year's increase on 30 September 2025, so news may come soon. The Council for Medical Schemes recommends 3.8% as the starting point for 2027 increases, a benchmark and not a cap. Follow our 2027 increases page.
Joining a Saver plan: waiting periods, tax and complaints
Discovery is an open scheme and must accept you if you can pay. If you had no scheme cover in the 90 days before applying, the law allows up to a 3-month general waiting period and up to a 12-month condition-specific one, but never for PMB treatment in the shorter-gap cases. Moving between options inside Discovery brings no new waiting period unless one is still running. See waiting periods and exclusions and late joiner penalty.
The 2026/27 medical scheme fees tax credit is R376 a month for the main member, R752 for the member and one dependant, and R254 for each additional dependant. See the medical aid tax credit.
If Discovery does not resolve a complaint, escalate to the Council for Medical Schemes with proof that you tried the scheme first. See how to complain to the CMS.
