KeyHealth is an open medical scheme, so any member of the public can join, and it is also one of 4 schemes accredited to operate in local government. In 2026 it has six options: Essence, Origin, Equilibrium, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Every option gives unlimited hospital cover at designated service provider (DSP) hospitals, with a 30% co-payment if you choose a non-DSP hospital.
KeyHealth is a not-for-profit scheme registered with the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) and administered by PPS Healthcare Administrators (PPSHA) in Centurion. At the end of 2025 it had 35 037 principal members and 73 946 beneficiaries, and its CEO's opinion piece of 25 September 2026 puts total beneficiaries at 78 000.
The scheme's real website is keyhealthmedical.co.za. Search results and older pages sometimes show a similar-looking domain, so type the address yourself. The plans and prices table and the contact numbers table are further down this page.
Who KeyHealth suits, and who it does not
KeyHealth suits people who are happy to use DSP hospitals in return for a defined ladder of options and, at the top, a wide chronic list.
- Budget-focused members can look at Essence, a low-cost network hospital plan, or Origin, a network plan with specified day-to-day benefits.
- Families who want savings and dental cover can look at Equilibrium.
- Members who want enhanced day-to-day cover can look at Silver, which also gives three extra doctor visits for child dependants.
- Members with heavier medical needs can look at Gold, with increased savings and out-of-hospital mental health cover, or Platinum, which has unlimited oncology and prosthesis benefits and a self-funding gap.
- Local government employees can use it as one of the 4 schemes accredited to operate in that sector, so ask your employer's HR department which options you may take.
It suits you less if you want a fully open choice of hospital, because all six options use the DSP network. It also suits you less if service speed matters most: KeyHealth has publicly admitted service shortfalls at its administrator in 2025, in call-centre capacity and pre-authorisation.

DSP hospitals, emergencies and day-to-day benefits
A designated service provider (DSP) is a hospital or doctor the scheme has arranged to treat its members. On every KeyHealth option, voluntary use of a non-DSP hospital carries a 30% co-payment. Check that your usual hospital is a DSP before joining. The designated service providers guide explains your rights, including the emergency rule.
Emergencies: Netcare 911 is KeyHealth's designated emergency transport provider. Easy-ER gives beneficiaries direct access to a hospital emergency room without a pre-authorisation delay, and an Easy-ER card for children confirms their benefit.
Day-to-day: Origin has specified day-to-day benefits, Equilibrium and Gold include savings, and Silver, Gold and Platinum have no co-payments for pathology tests during treatments, subject to scheme rules and DSPs. Gold and Platinum members do not pay extra out of pocket for chronic medication.
Chronic cover, maternity and extra programmes
Every scheme must pay Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) in full, and the CMS says these cover 271 conditions and 26 chronic conditions. KeyHealth's Essence and Origin cover the 26 chronic conditions, and higher options cover more. The table above shows the count for each option. Register your condition with the scheme so claims are paid from the right benefit.
KeyHealth also runs a Smart Baby Programme, and you can register a newborn on the KeyHealth mobi app. Other programmes are Health Booster, the Alignd Palliative Care Programme, an oncology management programme, a disease risk management programme and an HIV and Aids programme. The app also lets you update your details and track benefits in real time.
What changed for 2026 and what to expect in 2027
For 2026 the scheme gave a headline contribution increase of 8.4% in its own Facebook post. It did not appear on the website, and the 2025 annual report only says "modest average increases", so treat it as an unaudited figure. Local government members have separate contribution tables.
The financial position improved during 2025. Solvency reached 41.6% at the end of 2025, against the 25% legal requirement, and a budgeted R36.9 million deficit became a R250 million surplus. The scheme reports 6 676 new activations in 2025, including 2 940 new local government members.
No 2027 increase has been announced. The CMS recommends anchoring 2027 increases at 3.8%, a benchmark rather than a cap. See 2027 medical aid increases for what other schemes have published.
How KeyHealth compares with LA Health, Medihelp and Bonitas
- LA Health is a restricted scheme for local government employees, administered by Discovery Health. If you work for local government, compare it with KeyHealth. See the LA Health page.
- Medihelp is another open scheme with a network hospital plan at the entry level. Its 2026 weighted average increase was 8,46%.
- Bonitas is an open scheme with a reported 2026 increase of 8.88%.
KeyHealth's solvency of 41.6% is well above the 25% legal minimum. That says something about financial strength, not about how quickly claims and authorisations are handled, so ask current members about service too.
Waiting periods, late-joiner penalties and the tax credit
New joiners follow the Medical Schemes Act. With no scheme cover for at least 90 days, KeyHealth can apply a 3-month general waiting period and a 12-month condition-specific waiting period, depending on your earlier cover. After a shorter gap the rules are narrower, and PMB treatment is excluded. Read the waiting periods guide.
A late-joiner penalty can apply from age 35 without earlier cover. The maximum loading is 5% for 1 to 4 years of missing cover, 25% for 5 to 14 years, 50% for 15 to 24 years and 75% for 25 years or more. See the late-joiner penalty guide.
The 2026/27 medical scheme fees tax credit is R376 a month for the main member, R752 for the member and one dependant, and R254 for each additional dependant. See the tax credit guide.
How to join and how to complain
Apply through keyhealthmedical.co.za or a registered broker. New business enquiries are by email only, and the address is in the contact table. The medical aid contact numbers page also lists every scheme's official lines. Local government employees should also ask their employer's HR department which options they may take.
If something goes wrong, complain to KeyHealth first and keep the reference numbers. If you are still not satisfied, refer the complaint to the CMS at [email protected] with a completed complaint form and proof that you escalated to the scheme. The CMS acknowledges in writing within 6 working days and aims to finish within 120 calendar days of receiving the scheme's response and documents. See the CMS complaints guide.
Gap cover is not a medical scheme benefit. It is a health insurance product, and complaints go to the National Financial Ombud, not the CMS.
Frequently asked questions
What is the KeyHealth contact number?
According to KeyHealth's website (checked 29 September 2026), the member line is 0860 671 050, and for an emergency or ambulance call 082 911. Confirm on the official site before calling, because numbers change.
What is the official KeyHealth website?
The scheme's website is keyhealthmedical.co.za. Some search results and older pages show a similar-looking domain that is not the scheme. Type the address yourself and use the contact table on this page.
Is KeyHealth a good medical aid?
It has a strong solvency ratio of 41.6% and six clear options, but every option uses DSP hospitals and the scheme has admitted service shortfalls at its administrator in 2025. Whether it is good for you depends on your hospital, your budget and how much day-to-day cover you use.
What is the cheapest KeyHealth plan?
Essence is the cheapest option. It is a network hospital plan for critical cover at DSP hospitals. The 2026 prices are in the plans and prices table on this page.
How do I contact KeyHealth?
The contact numbers table on this page lists the Client Service Centre, hospital pre-authorisation, Easy-ER, dental, optical, the fraud line and a WhatsApp number. New business enquiries are by email only.
Which KeyHealth option has the most chronic conditions?
Platinum covers 55 chronic conditions, Gold 44, Equilibrium and Silver 29, and Essence and Origin 26. Ask the scheme which of your conditions are covered and under which programme.
Can I use any hospital on KeyHealth?
Not without cost. All six options use DSP hospitals, and voluntary use of a non-DSP hospital carries a 30% co-payment. In a genuine emergency you may use the nearest facility.
Is KeyHealth a local government scheme?
KeyHealth is an open scheme that anyone can join, and it is also one of 4 schemes accredited to operate in local government. Local government members have their own contribution tables.
Are there waiting periods on KeyHealth?
Yes. New joiners can face a 3-month general and a 12-month condition-specific waiting period, depending on prior cover. A late-joiner penalty can apply from age 35.
