Suremed Health is a registered open medical scheme, so anyone can apply, but it is very small and a merger with a partner it has not named is planned for 1 January 2027. If you join now, your plan line-up, contributions or even your scheme could change on that date.

The scheme is administered by MomentumTYB (Momentum Thebe Ya Bophelo). It had 628 principal members and 1 150 beneficiaries at 31 December 2025, down from 1 285 beneficiaries a year earlier.

For 2026 Suremed sells four options: Challenger, Navigator, Explorer and Shuttle. The contact numbers and 2026 contributions are in the tables on this page. This page explains who each option suits and what the merger means for you.

The planned 2027 merger, and what it means for you

Suremed's trustees have started a merger process with a partner the scheme has not named, with an estimated effective date of 1 January 2027. The AGM on 4 June 2026 had "Merger" on its agenda. The process followed a directive from the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS), based on financial performance, the size of the membership base, expected medical inflation and the capacity to raise contributions while staying affordable.

This is not the first attempt. In 2023 the CMS published notice of a proposed amalgamation between CompCare and Suremed, open for comment from 4 October to 30 November 2023. That merger did not complete, and Suremed still operates on its own in 2026.

What it means in practice: the 2027 plan line-up may change, and a member who joins now could be moved. If you are considering joining, ask Suremed what would happen to your option, your waiting periods and your chronic registration in a merger, and get the answer in writing. If you are a current member and feel you are not getting a fair explanation, raise it with the scheme and then the CMS.

What to know about Suremed in 2026

  • Open scheme: the 2026 scheme rules say membership is open to any person or group of persons, the CMS lists Suremed Health as OPEN, and the scheme has a merger with an unnamed partner planned for 1 January 2027. (suremedhealth.co.za)
  • Suremed's trustees have started a merger process with a partner that the scheme has not named, with an estimated effective date of 1 January 2027; the AGM on 4 June 2026 had 'Merger' as an agenda item. (suremedhealth.co.za)
  • The merger process followed a directive from the Council for Medical Schemes, based on financial performance, size of the membership base, expected medical inflation and capacity to raise contributions while staying affordable. (suremedhealth.co.za)
  • The AGM was scheduled for 13:00 on 4 June 2026 in Century City and on Microsoft Teams, with 'Merger' on the agenda. (suremedhealth.co.za)
  • The scheme is very small and shrinking: beneficiaries fell from 1 285 at 31 December 2024 to 1 150 at 31 December 2025, and gross contributions were R48 551 765 in 2025. (suremedhealth.co.za)
  • Reserves are above the statutory minimum: liabilities to members for future benefits were 75.07% of gross annual contribution income in 2025 (105.27% in 2024). (suremedhealth.co.za)
  • CMS Circular 35 of 2023 gave notice of an earlier proposed amalgamation between CompCare Medical Scheme and Suremed Health, open for comment from 4 October to 30 November 2023; Suremed is still operating as its own scheme in 2026, so that merger did not complete. (medicalschemes.co.za)
  • Shuttle members must get pre-authorisation before admission or pay a R500 levy per admission; hospital cover on Shuttle is at any Netcare hospital. (suremedhealth.co.za)
  • Shuttle is managed by Prime Cure, so all in- and out-of-hospital benefits go through the Prime Cure network; on Explorer, day-to-day claims go to Prime Cure and hospital and specialist claims go to MomentumTYB. (suremedhealth.co.za)
  • Claims have a four-month submission limit from the date of treatment. (suremedhealth.co.za)
  • The CMS register at 31 March 2025 lists Suremed Health as an OPEN scheme. (medicalschemes.co.za)

Suremed plans and prices in 2026

Suremed Health publishes 4 benefit options for 2026. Prices are the monthly contribution for a main member as published by Suremed, and income-banded plans show the band. Adult and child dependants pay extra. Checked on 29 September 2026.

Who Suremed suits, and who it does not

Suremed suits people who want a small scheme with a range that runs from an income-banded network option up to a comprehensive traditional plan. Its reserves are above the legal minimum: liabilities to members for future benefits were 75.07% of gross annual contribution income in 2025, down from 105.27% in 2024.

It does not suit people who want stability. The scheme is very small and shrinking, gross contributions were R48 551 765 in 2025, and the merger is planned. A larger scheme spreads risk across many more lives. If certainty matters to you, compare Suremed with a larger open scheme first.

Suremed contact numbers

Checked on 29 September 2026 against Suremed's official website. Numbers change, so confirm on the linked page before you call. A scheme will not ask you to pay into a new bank account over the phone: hang up and call the official number if anything feels off.

How the four options are structured in 2026

OptionTypeWhat it is
ChallengerComprehensiveTraditional plan with no annual limits, extensive major medical benefits and generous day-to-day sub-limits, aimed at higher earners; single rate, no income bands
NavigatorSaverExtensive major medical benefits with no annual limits, lower annual limits for conditions such as cancer and organ failure, and day-to-day paid from a savings account
ExplorerNetworkComprehensive major medical and day-to-day benefits through preferred providers, with hospital cover through the Netcare group; income-banded
ShuttleEntry levelPrivate hospital cover for planned procedures and emergencies plus medicine, dentistry, optometry and doctor visits; income-banded, managed through the Prime Cure network

Prices are in the plans table on this page. Read our network vs traditional plans guide to see how Explorer and Shuttle trade choice for cost.

Network and hospital rules

On Shuttle, hospital cover is at any Netcare hospital, and you must get pre-authorisation before admission or pay a R500 levy per admission. Shuttle is managed by Prime Cure, so all in- and out-of-hospital benefits go through the Prime Cure network.

On Explorer, day-to-day claims go to Prime Cure, while hospital and specialist claims go to MomentumTYB, and hospital cover is through the Netcare group. Two claims routes is an easy source of confusion, so keep both contact lines handy.

Claims have a four-month submission limit from the date of treatment, so do not sit on receipts. Emergency services are through ER24. The scheme's own pages show the ER24 number differently in two places, so confirm it before you need it. The pre-authorisation guide explains how to get approval.

Savings, day-to-day and chronic cover

Navigator splits each contribution into a risk portion and a savings portion, and day-to-day costs are paid from the savings account. Challenger has generous day-to-day sub-limits. Explorer and Shuttle deliver day-to-day care through the Prime Cure network.

For chronic medicine, MomentumTYB runs the Chronic Medication Programme, and there is a separate HIV/AIDS management programme run by Lifesense. Both lines are in the contact table. Whatever the option, PMBs must be paid in full, with no co-payment or deductible, when you use the scheme's designated service provider. See prescribed minimum benefits and chronic disease benefits.

Maternity

We could not verify maternity limits for any Suremed option. Ask in writing which option covers antenatal care and delivery, at which hospitals, and whether a waiting period applies. Bear in mind that the merger date is close. See our medical aid for pregnancy guide.

What changed for 2026 and what to expect for 2027

Suremed's site and reports do not publish a 2026 or 2027 average contribution increase, so we do not report one. The 2027 line-up may also change because of the merger, so any 2027 figure may come from the merged scheme. For context, the CMS recommended in Circular 20 of 2026 that 2027 increases be anchored at 3.8%, a benchmark and not a hard cap, while acknowledging that private medical inflation typically runs 2 to 3 percentage points above CPI. See our 2027 increases page.

How Suremed compares with alternatives

  • Medimed: also administered by MomentumTYB and also small, with savings and network options. See Medimed.
  • CompCare: the scheme named in the 2023 proposed amalgamation with Suremed. It reported a solvency ratio of 21.83% for 2024, below the 25% statutory minimum, and operates under a CMS-approved recovery plan. See CompCare.
  • Fedhealth: a larger not-for-profit open scheme with a wide option range. A proposed amalgamation with Medshield was ended on 10 November 2025, so it continues on its own. See Fedhealth.

The main difference is scale and certainty. The larger the scheme, the less its future depends on a single merger decision. See the list of medical aid schemes for the full field.

How to join Suremed and how to complain

Suremed's 2026 rules say membership is open to any person or group of persons, and the CMS register lists it as open. It cannot refuse you on age or health, but waiting periods can apply. The Medical Schemes Act sets the ceilings. If you have had no cover for 90 days or more, or have never had cover, a scheme may impose a general waiting period of up to three months and a condition-specific waiting period of up to 12 months. These are maximums, and a scheme may impose shorter periods or none. Switching within 90 days does not wipe waiting periods out: after up to 24 months of earlier cover the new scheme may still impose a condition-specific period of up to 12 months, and after more than 24 months it may still impose a general period of up to three months. Neither can be applied to treatment of Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs). There is no waiting period when you move between options on the same scheme, or for a baby born while you are a member. Read more in waiting periods and exclusions.

Late-joiner penalties. A late joiner is someone aged 35 or older when they apply, without earlier cover. The loading is a percentage of that adult's own part of the contribution only, and the maximum depends on the years you were uncovered after 35, less any years of cover you can prove: 1 to 4 years is 5%, 5 to 14 years is 25%, 15 to 24 years is 50% and 25 years or more is 75%. Example: a 45-year-old with no proof of earlier cover has 10 years to count (45 minus 35), which falls in the 5 to 14 year band, so the maximum loading is 25%. A sworn affidavit can prove earlier cover if the documents are gone, and the penalty can follow you to another scheme. See the late joiner penalty guide.

Tax credit. For the 2026/27 tax year (1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027) the medical scheme fees tax credit is R376 a month for you, R752 a month for you and one dependant together, and R254 a month for each additional dependant. It only reduces the tax you owe and cannot be carried over. Details are in the medical aid tax credit guide.

Complaints. If something goes wrong, raise it with Suremed first and keep a written record. Use the customer service centre first. If you are not satisfied after using the scheme's own complaints process, you can complain to the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS), the regulator. Send a completed complaint form with proof that you took it up with the scheme to [email protected], or phone the CMS on 0861 123 267 (Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 16:30). The CMS acknowledges a complaint in writing within 6 working days, asks the scheme to comment, and aims to finish within 120 calendar days of receiving the scheme's response and documents. Clinically urgent complaints are handled urgently. Our CMS complaints guide explains each step.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Suremed contact number?

According to Suremed's website (checked 29 September 2026), the member line is 0860 08 08 88 or (041) 395 4545, and for an emergency or ambulance call 084 124. Confirm on the official site before calling, because numbers change.

Is Suremed medical aid still operating in 2026?

Yes. Suremed Health is a registered open scheme with four options in 2026: Challenger, Navigator, Explorer and Shuttle. A merger with an unnamed partner is planned for 1 January 2027, so the picture may change.

Is Suremed merging with another scheme?

Its trustees have started a merger process with a partner the scheme has not named, with an estimated effective date of 1 January 2027. The AGM on 4 June 2026 had a merger item on its agenda. An earlier proposed amalgamation with CompCare in 2023 did not go ahead.

Is Suremed open to everyone?

Yes. The 2026 scheme rules say membership is open to any person or group of persons, and the CMS register lists Suremed Health as open. Waiting periods and late-joiner penalties can still apply.

How big is Suremed?

Very small. At 31 December 2025 it had 628 principal members and 1 150 beneficiaries, down from 687 members and 1 285 beneficiaries a year earlier. Reserves were above the statutory minimum.

Who administers Suremed?

MomentumTYB (Momentum Thebe Ya Bophelo, formerly Providence Healthcare Risk Managers) administers the scheme. Prime Cure manages the day-to-day benefits of Explorer and Shuttle. We found no mobile app, only a web member portal.

What is the claim deadline at Suremed?

Claims must be submitted within four months of the date of treatment. Shuttle members also need pre-authorisation before hospital admission, or a R500 levy applies per admission.

Should I join Suremed before the merger?

That is your decision, but ask what happens to your option, contributions and waiting periods if the merger goes ahead. A larger, stable scheme may give more certainty. Get any answers in writing.
