Genesis Medical Scheme is an open medical scheme with just three options for 2026: two hospital plans, MED-100 and MED-200, and MED-200 Plus, which adds a Self Managed Fund for day-to-day costs. It was registered with the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) in May 1995 and any South African citizen or permanent resident can apply.

Genesis runs its own administration, so there is no outside administrator. It announced an average contribution increase of 4.7% for 2026, and it reported an accumulated funds (solvency) ratio of 239% at 31 December 2025 against the 25% legal minimum.

The catch is the plan range: it is short, and only one option has any savings-style day-to-day benefit. This review explains who that suits and who should look elsewhere. Contact numbers and 2026 contributions are in the tables on this page, taken from Genesis's own site.

Who Genesis suits, and who it does not

Genesis suits people who want solid cover for hospital stays at a fixed price per adult and do not need a long menu of plans. Contributions are not income-based: depending on the option, every adult member pays the same monthly contribution, and children cost less.

It is a weaker fit if you want a network plan with a lower price, an income-banded entry option, or a long ladder of comprehensive plans with big day-to-day limits. Genesis has none of those. Foreign students who apply only to get a study visa are not eligible.

If your main worry is a large hospital bill rather than everyday doctor visits, read the hospital plan guide and the comparison of hospital plans against comprehensive plans.

Genesis plans and prices in 2026

Genesis Medical Scheme publishes 3 benefit options for 2026. Prices are the monthly contribution for a main member as published by Genesis. Adult and child dependants pay extra. Checked on 29 September 2026.

The three 2026 options

A percentage of Scheme Tariff is how much of the scheme's own rate Genesis pays. Doctors can charge more, and you pay the difference, so ask your provider what they bill before you choose between the 100% and 200% levels.

Genesis states the Self Managed Fund on MED-200 Plus as R10 800 per adult per year in its brochure, but its home page says R9 900. Confirm the current figure with the scheme before you rely on either.

Genesis contact numbers

Checked on 29 September 2026 against Genesis's official website. Numbers change, so confirm on the linked page before you call. A scheme will not ask you to pay into a new bank account over the phone: hang up and call the official number if anything feels off.

Hospitals, pre-authorisation and emergencies

Genesis is not a network scheme. Hospital benefits apply at any provider of choice, and designated service providers (DSPs) apply only to some benefits, such as mental illness and out-of-hospital cancer treatment. That is a real advantage over network plans that limit where you can be admitted. Read the designated service providers guide to see what a DSP rule means in practice.

For planned admissions you need a hospital admission reference number 72 hours before you go in. The pre-authorisation guide covers how that works.

In an emergency, Genesis's preferred provider is ER24. Emergency medical evacuation is paid at 100% of cost when you use ER24. After an emergency admission, the hospital or you must notify Genesis on the first working day. The emergency and ambulance cover guide explains your rights.

Day-to-day benefits, savings and chronic cover

On MED-100 and MED-200 you pay for everyday costs such as GP visits and medicine yourself, apart from the screening, basic dentistry and scan benefits listed above. Only MED-200 Plus has a Self Managed Fund, which works like a savings account for out-of-hospital costs. When it runs out, you pay the balance. The medical savings account guide and day-to-day benefits guide explain what this means for a budget.

Genesis covers the Prescribed Chronic Disease List (PMB) conditions, subject to approval, registration and its formulary. Its brochures do not give a condition count, and the CMS itself cites 26 on one page and 27 in a 2026 presentation, so we have not stated a number. The chronic disease guide explains registration.

Increases, reserves and 2027

Genesis announced an average 4.7% increase for 2026. It says other open schemes announced between 6.8% and 9.9%, and that this is the lowest average of all open schemes for the 14th year running. That is Genesis's own claim, and its 2025 financial statements call 2025 the twelfth year, so treat the count with caution. The reserves are clearer: a solvency ratio of 239% at the end of 2025, compared with 243% in 2024.

Membership was 9 224 members and 19 362 beneficiaries at 31 December 2025, and the scheme says it is growing.

Genesis had not announced 2027 contributions by 29 September 2026. The CMS has recommended that 2027 increases be anchored at 3.8%. Fedhealth and Medshield had announced 2027 figures by then, and our 2027 increases page keeps the list current.

How Genesis compares

Bestmed is open and self-administered like Genesis, but has a much wider range from hospital plans to comprehensive options, and a 6.8% average increase for 2026. See the Bestmed review.

Medshield is open and self-administered, with network options (MediPlus, MediValue, MediPhila and MediCurve) and a hospital plan called MediCore. Its 2026 weighted average increase was 7.5%. See the Medshield review.

KeyHealth is open with a network hospital plan called Essence and several comprehensive options. Its 2026 increase was 8.4%. See the KeyHealth review.

Genesis's edge is a lower increase and strong reserves. Its trade-offs are only three options and one savings-style plan. See cheapest medical aid for the wider comparison.

Joining, waiting periods and complaints

Genesis is open, so it must accept any applicant who can pay, but it can apply waiting periods. The Medical Schemes Act allows up to 3 months general and 12 months condition-specific waiting periods, and these are maximums. Ask Genesis what it applies to you. If you are 35 or older and have no proof of earlier cover, a late joiner penalty of 5%, 25%, 50% or 75% of your contribution can apply, depending on how many years you were uncovered. See the waiting periods guide, the late joiner penalty guide and how to join a medical aid.

Genesis also has a free smartphone app with an electronic membership card that dependants can install too.

If you are unhappy, complain to Genesis first. If that fails, the CMS takes complaints at [email protected] or 0861 123 267. See how to complain to the CMS.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Genesis contact number?

According to Genesis's website (checked 29 September 2026), the member line is 0861 56 46 66, and for an emergency or ambulance call 0861 43 63 74. Confirm on the official site before calling, because numbers change.

Is Genesis an open medical scheme?

Yes. Genesis is an open scheme registered with the CMS in May 1995, and any South African citizen or permanent resident can apply. Foreign students who apply only to get a study visa are not eligible.

What plans does Genesis offer in 2026?

Three: MED-100 and MED-200, which are hospital plans, and MED-200 Plus, which adds a Self Managed Fund for day-to-day costs. Contributions are the same for every adult on an option.

Is Genesis a good medical aid?

It is good value if you mainly want hospital cover with no network limits and a low increase. It is not ideal if you want big day-to-day benefits, an income-based plan or a network discount option, because it has none. Compare it with your own needs and budget.

Does Genesis have a hospital network?

No. Hospital benefits apply at any provider of choice. Designated service providers apply only to certain benefits, such as mental illness and out-of-hospital cancer treatment.

Does Genesis have a savings account?

Only MED-200 Plus does, called a Self Managed Fund. The other two options have no savings account, so day-to-day costs come out of your pocket.

How much did Genesis increase in 2026?

Genesis announced an average contribution increase of 4.7% for 2026. It had not announced 2027 contributions by 29 September 2026.

Is Genesis financially stable?

Its accumulated funds ratio was 239% at 31 December 2025, against a legal minimum of 25%. That is well above the requirement, though a ratio is one measure among several.
